Frequently Asked Questions

Do you  know how much HP I can expect from the swap?

I currently don't have any results from a stock TPI motor swap.
But I do have a few for a non stock applications. Dyno Results

Can I use my TPI style adjustable fuel pressure regulator or must I buy a new LT1 style AFPR?

You cannot use the TPI style AFPR on a LT1 fuel rail. You must use a AFPR specific to the LT1. I highly recommend the Accel part number 74566. Other AFPR's may not clear the newly installed distributor.

What's the part number for the throttle cable bracket?

The GM part number for the '93 Camaro throttle cable bracket is 10226089. It has the provision for the transmission cable.
I sell these also. But not seperately.

How much does the conversion cost?

I have prices listed under "Price List" on the main page. Click here for price info.

How much is shipping?

A complete intake is in the $20 to $30 range
A thermostat housing is in the $6 to $10 range
For a distributor spacer, the shipping is included in the price.

How do I  hook up my fuel lines?
I can provide you with SS braided teflon lined hose if desired.
The hoses are cut to the length you provide me and the fittings installed.

Will the LT1 intake fit my standard SBC heads?

I have test fit the intake on several different types of heads including stock early and late bolt pattern, Trick Flow, and AFR. Due to the dozens of heads available for the SBC I cannot test fit them all.

Some heads that have had problems are World Products Dart II and Sportsman II  heads. The coolant ports and EGR port are much larger and there isn't enough intake flange to cover the larger holes. Seems like to me some material would need to be welded to the LT1 intake to provide additional coverage of these larger holes.

Will the LT1 intake fit Vortec heads?

No, it will not fit. The intake mating flange is too narrow to cover the tall ports that the Vortec head uses. Here's a cutaway picture with a standard SBC intake mated to Fastburn heads. Fastburn heads are drilled with both standard SBC and Vortec bolt patterns.

The LT4 intake will not fit Vortec heads either. This is due to the Vortec bolt pattern being way too high on the head for the intake. The LT4 intake can be adapted to Fastburn heads because they are drilled for both standard and Vortec bolt patterns. So an LT4 intake would still require a bolt pattern change to std gen1. Some port  matching on the LT4 intake will be required when using Fastburn heads.

Do you supply an LT4 intake if requested?

I prefer to stay away from LT4 manifolds because a). they are hard to come by except for new and b). they are best suited to GM Fastburn heads only due to the different port design and specialized bolt pattern.

Can I use my stock distributor?

The older HEI distributor with the coil on top does not work with the LT1 intake. You will need the smaller 1987+ Camaro/Firebird distributor with external coil unless you completely remove the EGR bosses from the intake casting.

To easily convert the wiring of the large cap distributor to small cap distributor Accel makes an adaptor. Click here for more info.

Do I need all new sensors?

No, you re-use all your existing sensors if you are converting from a TPI system.
I prefer a  GM purchased 3 wire heated O2 sensor p/n 25312179 aka AFS-74.
You'll have to hook up the heater wires to a switched power source and ground.
When purchased from a non GM source, an inferior O2 sensor is often substituted.
This is almost a mandatory item when running headers.

Can I use the stock computer (ECM)?

Yes, you can use the stock ECM if you already have a TPI car. Some prom programming will enhance performance, available from me. If you need an ECM, here is a cross reference. ECM interchange
You will need to order a Memcal (chip) from GM if you don't already have one.

Do I need the LT1 wire harness?

No, you will use all the original wiring from the existing TPI system. One coolant temp sensor wire might have to be re-located to the remote thermostat housing.

I am converting from a carburetor  system, what are my options?

If you are converting from a carburetor in a car that had TPI as an option (Camaro, Firebird) you should get the engine harness from that vehicle. If you are converting from a car that did not have a TPI option you will need a stand alone harness from the aftermarket. Contact "Painless Wiring" for more information. http://www.painlessperformance.com/
You can also search the internet for a harness. Or obtain a harness from a scrap vehicle and
modify it to fit. Often only a few wires need moved or added. Look for a car with a 7730
ecm. Here is a list of vehicles. ECM interchange
I also have a source for custom harnesses at a better price than the big names.

What about the VATS system?
You will have to defeat it in some way to allow the engine to run if your car didn't come with it. The easiest method is to have it turned off in the chip. But this requires a custom chip to be purchased.

Why can't I use a 1993 LT1 intake?

The 1993 intake is different then the 1994+ manifold as the fuel crossover is at the rear in '93. That will hinder the installation of a distributor. The '94+ manifolds have the fuel crossover in the front and leaves plenty of clearances in the back for the distributor.

Is the manifold ready to run with the exception of throttle body, injectors?  If
not, what else is needed to install the intake?

You will need your existing injectors and throttle body. Then the intake is ready to run. Also, if you have the large HEI distributor you will need to replace it with the small '87+ HEI with external coil.
Also needed are fuel lines to mate to the new fuel rail, remote t-stat housing. Both of which I sell. Then there are the small things like coolant hoses. I can supply these too. But they aren't included in my "kit". See here for more info.

On your conversion, how are the unused bolt holes plugged?

I use a cold weld (JB Weld) mainly for looks, the unused holes don't affect the installation at all. I would be afraid to aluminum weld them due to the heat and possible warpage of the manifold scrapping it.

Is the conversion emissions legal?

No, the EGR must be removed to provide room for the distributor.

I want to know where else I can get the remote thermostat housing .

The remote t-stat housing I used to get from Weiand, part number 7134 or 7134P if you want it polished.

Summit part number WND-7134 or WND-7134P
Jegs part number 925-7134
PAW part number WEI-7134

The Weiand ones were getting very hard to get cheaper and lead time was outrageous so I went to Offenhauser, it's part number is 5308.

Summit part number OFY-5308
Jegs part number ???
PAW part number OFF-5308

And finally there are other internet performance parts stores that may carry these housings. You will just have to search.

Do you add the extra hole in the remote thermostat housing for the CTS sensor for us?

Yes I do, if you get the remote thermostat housing from me I do it at no charge.

How are the vacuum lines routed?
The stock lt1 ports are shown here
Vacuum port locations

The right hand and front ports can be plugged if not needed.

The stock TPI routing is shown  here

Can I do it myself?

Yes you can. It's just a matter of access to the right tools.

Here's how John Millican accomplished the first one.
